Anglo American started ore exploration in Lapland in 2004 and the actual Sakatti deposit was discovered five years later. The Finnish subsidiary, AA Sakatti Mining Oy, registered in Sodankylä, was established in 2011 to implement the Sakatti Mining Project.
The Sakatti multi-metal deposit is located approximately 15 kilometres north of Sodankylä. The area is partly located in the Viiankiaapa Mire Protection Area, which is also a Natura 2000 site. The deposit of exceptionally high metal concentrations contains raw materials listed as critical by the European Union: copper, nickel, cobalt, and platinum group metals.
The Sakatti Mining Project employs approximately 60 people at the sites of Sodankylä and Oulu. The project is currently in the planning and permitting phase. AA Sakatti Mining Oy submitted an application for a mining permit in 2024 and the environmental permit application is expected to be submitted in 2025.
The mining project will be implemented using the parent company’s FutureSmart Mining™ operating model, which aims to achieve carbon-neutral operations of the mine and a net positive impact on biodiversity. If realised, the regional economic impact of the mine will be significant. Approximately 350 direct jobs will be created and about 900 indirect jobs will be created. The aim is to start mining operations in the early 2030s.
The summer jobs and apprenticeships for the mining project will be updated by 16 January 2025.
